I’m often contacted by PR firms and publicists to write about various topics or interview people for my interview website. People are always looking to promote something or someone. I now find myself in the same boat.

One of my most recent contacts was with a publicist/owner of a a boutique PR firm named Mona Elyafi. She has such an interesting bio and after I provided her with some interview questions for her client, I mentioned that I should be interviewing her. Yes, I found her that interesting.

I already know one question I’ll ask. It’s a selfish question too. I want to know if there has ever been a time she’s had to promote herself or her company. I’m sure the answer is probably a “yes.” I want to know if publicists find it more difficult to promote themselves or a project they are closely associated with or if it is easier to promote clients and their work.

As for me, I’ve done promotion in the past, I’ve been on the promoting end of PR for other people and it was fun. But doing so for myself, either as a fundrasier for our ministry work or in promoting my new book Purple Ducks, I have always found it difficult to toot my own horn.

How about you? Do you find it difficult to promote yourself? I’d like to know.

I will soon have an e-book for sale in iTunes, via Barnes & Noble, on Smashwords and for download on many other ebook distributors. I hope and pray you will find it beneficial to your spiritual walk with Christ. Other offerings will soon follow, one is tentatively titled Purple Ducks and the other is an e-booklet called Baptism: Symbolic Christian Water Rite or Salvific Act of God?

The goal is that people will read DROP and see that realistic spirituality is a matter of ups and downs. Each of our spiritual journeys are traveled on a road and that road has detours and jagged turns and rarely if ever go straight up to the top of some spiritual mountain or plateau.

All proceeds go toward our ministry work with the Heartland Assisted Living Center, our Zach’s House ministry and my devotional ministry. If you could be open to writing a review about DROP or write a few words on Facebook about it, I’d greatly appreciate it. Just send a message via our contact page and let me know if you’re up to that task. Thanks.

Here’s the cover.

Why do people become former critique partners?

This happens for a number of reasons. There are the bad reasons such as 1) They don’t get anything out of the critiques from group members and think they could use their time better in another group or exchanging stories with fellow writers they meet online on Verla Kay’s blueboard or on the SCBWI website. This is a former critique partner because of choice, their choice to find better critiques.

Another reason people become a former critique member are that they are not contributing to the group in a way that others are contributing to them. This happens when a writer takes more than they give by not doing thorough critiques for her fellow critique group partners. Everyone has probably experienced this. It’s not fun. It’s okay if only one member in a group is identified as more of a taker than giver, but those other group members better do some brilliant critiques for you to make it all worthwhile. This is a former critique partner not by choice, but more so by being asked to resign.

The best way someone becomes a former critique partner is when they move on to success due to publication. Most people do not leave their critique groups when they finally sell a manuscript or two, but due to busy schedules, they may be forced to leave, especially if the critique group is about 6-8 writers. This is being a former critique partner by choice and good circumstances.

I just had a former critique partner who is busy and now published offer to critique one of my latest stories. I am very thankful to Debbie for her offer. Now I just need to make sure to send something her way.

Man ‘o man, I wish I was at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas this week. There will be about 7000 pizzeria owners, pizza suppliers, vendors etc at the show. Three days of fun and exposure.

This is just part of the fun at the Pizza Expo

We’ve created a couple specials on our site for Pizza Expo attendees. We have free promotion for any restaurants who want to partner with our pizzeria specific online ordering partner.

We are also offering the first 50 pizzerias who want a “review listing” on PizzaSpotz.com a free one just for them.

I should be posting a new article for The Pizza Blog titled, “Top Ten Things to do in Las Vegas After the Pizza Expo.” I hope to finish that today or later tonight.

Our World Pizza Directory will soon have menu/online ordering links to many of our listed pizzerias.

We’re partnering with three online ordering sites to provide this information.

Yesterday, we also had someone interested in purchasing PizzaSpotz, a former pizzeria owner in CT. However,
I think he was more interested in the name than the site. But the domain is not for sale.

We also had a pizzeria owner in PA tell say she’d see me at the International Pizza Expo next week.
In my dreams. It just won’t happen this year. But starting in 2014, I do not picture myself missing the
Pizza Expo ever again.

I cannot wait to go.

I woke up this morning.

I think this simple thing shows me God is great!

With the medical problem I have, at least the one I know about (there may be others),
I count every single day I wake up as a blessing. However, I don’t always show God
my appreciation for being allowed to walk on the face of his beautiful earth.

It would be a better way to show my love to God if only I would act like
a Christian should act, not only on specific days, but every single day of the week.

My prayer today is that we all act like we’re thankful to be here.

God be with us all.

I’m typing up some blog posts for my new website BrianHumek.com. I really like this wordpress theme. The house is quiet at 10:50 p.m. It’s been that way for about 45 min. It was a busy day at church, our nursing home ministry, and LTC practice for my son. Back home tonight, I made a pizza from a dough bought at Tom Thumb and I added a bunch of ingredients to a jar of Classico pizza sauce. Lots of sugar. The pizza isn’t half bad. Before going to bed, my wife asked me to make her one with spinach. I think I will when I’m done writing this. I might even add some bell peppers (orange ones).

Just a little bit more to go in the old time radio show I’m now listing to and then I’ll start the pizza. I should be in bed, but can’t get there just yet. I’m not even tired.

One more blog post to add to the new blog. I really am loving this new blog. I hope it helps people see my journey and will be something that Christians who are interested in our church planting and ministry work will find informative. Now on to my first post on my photography blog section. Some people just call those things “photoblogs.” : )

After getting our car stolen, returned and fixed up a little, we are beginning to return to our normal routine.

Today we visited a friend to whom we’ve been ministering to for quite a while. The last time I had seen him he had mentioned the doctor wanted him to have a colonoscopy. It’s been three weeks and he told me today he still hasn’t gone. He gave me a terrible excuse.

I asked if I was going to have to go to his house and drag him to the doctor. One of the most difficult things in ministering to people is that you naturally begin to care a lot about them. I hate to see my friend neglect his health, especially when it could be devastating to him and his family.

Please pray that my unnamed friend, let’s just call him Bill, will go see the doctor and that his symptoms do not wind up being cancerous.

December calendarEvery year I write 40 picture books. That’s a lot of books and most of that writing inevitably happens in December as I’m busy trying to make my goal.

Why 40?

It just happened organically one year and the next year, I thought I should repeat that act. After that, it became a tradition. I find writing therapeutic and meeting a goal, any goal is absolutely thrilling for me.

But last year I began what I hope is not a new tradition, I submitted maybe 12 picture books to publishers, only 12. That’s a very small number compared to what I was subbing in 2011, 2010 and 2009 and going back to 2004 when first began serious submissions.

It’s already March of 2013 and I’ve yet to sub a manuscript. I better get going, huh?

One of my entrepreneurial pursuits is called GotInterviews.com. One of the things I believe is that everyone is interesting if you ask them some questions. It’s quite true really. My upcoming interviews are with a man who is called the pioneer of gamification, a very great guy and I can’t wait to get him some questions. I also have planned, an interview with a woman who specializes in small space gardening, and the lead singer of one of the “hardest rocking power trios in Texas.”

If you’d like to contribute some thoughts on how to monetize such a site, I’d welcome your thoughts. I’ve got ideas, but I love this world we live in because everyone has ideas and loves to share them. Please send any thoughts to brian humek (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thanks,
Brian
